Park City Design and Building Trends

Building your custom home in Park City is an obvious choice, whether it’s your primary or secondary residence

Park City, Utah, offers world-class outdoor recreation, hosts one of the most important film festivals of the year, and has a charming downtown culture complete with art studios, thriving nightlife, and highly-rated restaurants. Here, a charming small-town feel blends with premier amenities and luxuries.

Building your custom home in Park City is an obvious choice, whether it’s your primary or secondary residence. But don’t let the mountain vibes fool you, the city is full of many home design styles from a true cabin style to elegant contemporary styles (and everything in between). We’ve seen a few recent trends in Park City design, and we love the personalization and uniqueness of each of these styles.

Design And Building Trends In Park City

Personalized Mountain Styles

When you think of a “mountain style home” you might think plaid, bear skin rugs, log walls, and a cast iron sink

When you think of a “mountain style home” you might think plaid, bear skin rugs, log walls, and a cast iron sink. And while there’s definitely a place for a true cabin-like vibe, if that’s not your style, we can create a personalized mountain style for your space. Some of our favorite projects are a combination of a more rugged, mountain style and another style, like traditional or transitional styles. For example, the kitchen above showcases rock-covered pillars, exposed beams, and a dark wood floor, all of which lean towards a more rustic feel. However, balanced with the bright and happy green of the kitchen cabinets, the light colors in the textiles, tons of natural light, and stunning light fixtures, the space has a good dose of traditional, perhaps even elevated cottage-like appeal.

This inviting kitchen, with custom cabinetry, lots of natural light, a sturdy wood table, and stunning light fixtures, balances a cabin-like style with a more transitional feeling.

The open shelving with industrial vibes, backsplash detail above the range, black hardware, and light fixtures all blend together for that more transitional style.

Clean Contemporary

Sometimes, a neutral palette is perfect for a custom home, especially in such a breathtaking place like Park City. With a balance of clean lines, simple patterns, and a more monochromatic vibe, contemporary homes work beautifully in the vibrant and ever-changing seasons in Park City.

With a balance of clean lines, simple patterns, and a more monochromatic vibe, contemporary homes work beautifully in the vibrant and ever-changing seasons in Park City. The bedroom pictured above is a perfect example: this space is warm, inviting, and calming. Because of the floor-to-ceiling windows, the light will make a huge impact on the feeling of the space.

In the winter, this room feels even more cozy, with the simple beiges, whites, and tans complimenting the brilliant snow outside. When fall and spring make their colorful entrances, this space feels mellow and allows the outside to shine. Every detail of this space, from the cozy rug that ties the colors together to the huge windows and domed ceiling, is a perfect blend of contemporary and cozy.

Contemporary doesn’t have to mean monochromatic, however. This basement hangout is the perfect example of blending contemporary with cabin. The vertical rustic wood paneling adds that charm without feeling like a log cabin, and the fireplace's black stone surround balances out the paneling's wood tones.

The furniture in this room also adds to the modern cabin vibes. The bright teal velvet of the swivel chair adds a pop of color, and the aged wood coffee table balances the modern look of the chair. Combining all of these features into one room allows the home to feel true to the mountain roots of Park City without losing the character and personality of the homeowners.

Modern Organic

Modern organic design seeks to marry the simplicity and ease of minimalist design with nature's warmth, texture, and visual interest. Taking simple mid-century modern shapes as shown in the dining chairs here, then adding the texture and depth of the stone wall, this living space exemplifies modern organic style

If you haven’t seen this latest trend in design, welcome to the charm and warmth of a modern organic space. Modern organic design seeks to marry the simplicity and ease of minimalist design with nature’s warmth, texture, and visual interest. Taking simple mid-century modern shapes as shown in the dining chairs here, then adding the texture and depth of the stone wall, this living space exemplifies modern organic style. The clean lines of the kitchen cabinetry are minimalist, but the cabinets’ light wood tone and grain are natural. The tray ceiling leans more modern, but the exposed wood on each tray’s level is more natural.

In this home, we see the importance of natural light, simple lines, and mid-century modern influences. The chair in this mini library adds a pop of color and modern flair, and the wood tones in the shelves, door, and floor bring an earthy warmth.

The floor-to-ceiling windows add extra light to the space but also bring the outdoor elements in with the views of the trees, mountains, and skylines. Modern organic may be a newer design style in Park City, but it’s one of our favorites.

Finding Inspiration for Your Park City Home

Finding inspiration for your next home is more overwhelming than ever, and that’s a two-edged sword. On the one hand, with so many images of stunning homes on the internet, there’s more inspiration than ever. However, sometimes too many choices feel overwhelming even to the most trained designer’s eye.

TRENDING: The Benefits Of A Custom Home Builder

Here’s how we like to get our client’s idea boards started. First, name a few words for how you want your space to feel (not necessarily how you want it to look). Some examples of words could be warm, inviting, simple, clean, effortless, personalized, eclectic, snug, natural, restful. Then combine some of those words with design styles you like: modern, contemporary, traditional, rustic, transitional, coastal, cottage, mid-century, Scandinavian, farmhouse, industrial, minimalist, maximalist, and bohemian.

For example, your words might be “warm, clean, minimalist rustic.” Then, pop those terms into your search browser and see what comes up. Keep tweaking your words until most of the images you find start to feel like you and your style. We recommend searching on many platforms for your images, including Pinterest, Houzz, and Instagram.  We have several projects that have modern organic elements, mountain styles, and contemporary vibes in our portfolio as additional resources when you are looking for a Park City design style.
