Tall Pines Construction History

The Dream and the Journey of Tall Pines Construction

Tall Pines Construction began with a dream—a dream rooted in hard work, expertise, and a passion for creating exceptional homes. Founded in June 2004 by Garrett Strong, the company emerged from Garrett’s diverse hands-on experience and a clear vision to build beautiful, high-quality homes while fostering a positive work environment and a deep commitment to sustainability.

Garrett’s journey began in the Salt Lake area, where he spent five years working on a framing crew, gaining invaluable experience in the trades. While pursuing his education, a friend introduced him to a custom construction company in Park City, where Garrett found a place to further refine his skills. At just 22 years old, he was running one of the company’s framing crews, immersing himself in all aspects of construction—from framing to finish work, custom log designs, tile, and exterior finishes like siding and soffit. This hands-on experience laid a solid foundation for his future as a builder.

In 2003, after the Winter Olympics, Garrett had accumulated enough knowledge to take on a major personal project: building his own home. With the determination to pursue his dream while still working his day job, Garrett built his first solo home, working nights and weekends. It was through this experience that Garrett realized he was ready to take the next step—starting his own company.

Leaving the security of the Park City firm, Garrett set out with one friend to form Tall Pines Construction. In the early days, the work was diverse, from hand excavation for bathroom remodels to framing and exterior veneer projects. Fortunately, an early investor recognized Garrett’s potential and helped fund Tall Pines’ first spec home in Park City. This marked the beginning of the company’s growth. That one spec home led to custom homes, and soon, Tall Pines Construction was known for delivering quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The team grew slowly but steadily—from two people to five—and the company began to focus on more than just building homes; Tall Pines began to invest heavily in sustainability and energy-efficient building practices. With several team members becoming certified by the National Association of Home Builders as Certified Green Builders, Tall Pines Construction set its sights on creating beautiful homes and pioneering sustainable, eco-friendly construction. This vision was realized when Tall Pines built the first LEED Platinum home in Utah and, to their knowledge, the first west of the Mississippi.

As the company expanded, so did its commitment to continuous improvement. Today, Tall Pines Construction has more than 20 dedicated team members, each working together with a shared passion for delivering the best possible homes and client experiences. Garrett’s original dream remains unchanged: to build beautiful homes, work with great people, and help clients realize their vision.

Tall Pines Construction is constantly evolving. It seeks ways to improve processes, embrace new technology, and invest in the latest software to ensure that out-of-town clients feel as connected to their projects as those on-site. But the heart of the company remains its people. Garrett is committed to mentoring the next generation of craftsmen, as he was mentored early on. Through Tall Pines, he offers on-the-job training and a path for others to enter the trade with the same hands-on experience that launched his career.
