The First LEED Platinum Home in Utah: Sustainable Luxury in Park City

The Sun Gazing House in Park City was the first LEED Platinum-certified home in Utah. It has inspired and encouraged other builders in the state to incorporate green building practices.

Few homes in the country, let alone the state, can claim the illustrious title of LEED Platinum-certified (the country’s highest level of certification for green buildings). While the certification is difficult to achieve, our innovative team took this home to the next level by customizing and inventing even more ways to utilize every watt of energy without sacrificing style or function.

You might be wondering if a home that is so energy-efficient could possibly feel elevated and luxurious, and this home, with its unique and beautiful features, shows that it is absolutely possible- just look at the stunning Sun Gazing House built by our team at Tall Pines Construction.

How the Sun Gazing House Set a New Benchmark in Sustainable Design

We are proud to be part of the first LEED Platinum-certified home in Utah. The project is a stunning testament to the benefits of sustainable building practices, and we wanted to show other builders that building beautiful homes with green features is possible.

Visionary Design and Collaboration

We collaborated with famed architects Jean-Yves Lacroix and Troy Harvey of PassiveLogic to design and build this one-of-a-kind home. Every single decision, from the direction the house faces to the type of sealants used, was a combination of the team’s genius. Without sacrificing luxury or function, this home is the culmination of excellence in innovative architecture, building, and design.

Achieving LEED Platinum Status: What It Took

Becoming a LEED Certified project requires several steps, ultimately applying an overview of the project to the USGBC (the United States Green Building Counsel). Throughout the design and building process, we take careful notes and documentation of our innovative green designs and then submit this information as part of our application.

The application is reviewed by the USGBC and given a total number of points. Depending on the number of green designs added to the project, you will receive more or fewer points—to receive LEED Platinum certification, you need to have 80+ points. With all the inventive green features we added to this home, we hit 80+ points with ease.

Impact on Park City and the Mountain Home Aesthetic

The Sun Gazing House is Utah’s first LEED Platinum-certified home, and we take a lot of pride in knowing that our collaborative project has trailblazed for other Utah builders. We’ve seen a rise in interest from our clients regarding green building practices. Even if a client doesn’t want to be fully LEED certified, there has been a significant rise in interest regarding small tweaks that can be made in the building process to reduce the home’s carbon footprint.

By designing a home that feels elevated, inviting, and unique, we have shown home builders in Utah that green building doesn’t mean ugly or boring. The Sun Gazing House is physical proof that we can make green building practices beautiful.
